Volunteer Spotlight: Jack

Volunteer Spotlight: Jack
Meet Jack,
ESL Volunteer!

Tell us how you first got involved with The Connection:
I was interested in finding community service locally and I enjoy teaching, so I thought it would be great to become a volunteer ESL teacher at the Connection. I wanted to get some more experience working with people different than myself before I started medical school and thought that this would be a good opportunity to do so.

Can you share a personal experience you’ve had while volunteering?
I have enjoyed connecting with my students on a personal level and listening to them share stories about their lives. I particularly like when the students I work with tell me about times they have used new phrases, vocabulary or grammar that they learned in class to help them in their everyday lives and how it has improved their ability to communicate with their friends, families and coworkers.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at The Connection?
Volunteering at the Connection is a worthwhile and enjoyable experience where you feel that you are making a positive impact on your community.

What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I work at Celgene Corporation in Summit and I will be attending medical school this fall.
